Bunds around crude oil storage play an important part in containing spills, so their condition needs to be well understood. Geotesta was engaged to assess the geotechnical and environmental condition of a crude oil storage bund on Varanus Island.
The work began with a desktop review of the bund’s design, construction, inspection, environmental and maintenance records. This identified gaps in the available data and shaped a targeted field program. Our team then carried out an on-site investigation that included inspection, hand augering, soil sampling, groundwater observations and laboratory testing.
The findings were brought together in a single assessment covering geotechnical and environmental conditions, slope stability, drainage and bund capacity, and compliance with the relevant Australian Standard. The client received practical recommendations for remediation, ongoing maintenance and monitoring to support the continued service of the bund.
