Microsoft engaged Geotesta as its geotechnical partner across a program of hyperscale data centre developments spanning Victoria (MEL04, MEL05 (Yarraville), MEL07 (Tullamarine), MEL11 (Truganina), and the associated MEL11 substation and VDA facilities). The multi-site engagement called for consistent, program-wide geotechnical support from early planning through to construction handover.
Site investigations combined boreholes, CPTs, test pits, groundwater monitoring and laboratory testing to characterise the basaltic and residual soil profiles typical of Melbourne’s western growth corridor, ground conditions that can vary significantly across even short distances and demand careful interpretation. These findings underpinned engineering parameters and design advice for heavily loaded data halls, substations, service corridors and ancillary infrastructure.
Recommendations covered foundations and piling, settlement assessments, earthworks specifications and subgrade improvement strategies suited to the strict performance tolerances of critical digital infrastructure. Through construction, Geotesta stayed engaged (pile founding inspections, subgrade verification, earthworks testing and geotechnical certification across multiple staged developments) giving Microsoft consistent technical assurance as its Victorian data centre footprint expanded.
