Installing high-voltage cable beneath an operating railway leaves very little room for ground movement. Geotesta was engaged to investigate the ground conditions and assess the potential impacts of a proposed Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) crossing beneath a railway corridor in southern Perth area, Western Australia.
Our field investigation used Cone Penetration Testing with pore-pressure measurements on both sides of the alignment. This gave a clear picture of the subsurface profile and the depth to limestone. From this, we developed a geotechnical model and carried out PLAXIS 2D finite element analysis to estimate ground movement and settlement beneath the rail and nearby infrastructure.
The analysis showed that predicted settlement beneath the railway was minimal. We provided practical recommendations on drilling methodology, grouting, monitoring and construction controls to support the safe delivery of the underbore.
