Mining Instrumentation

Continuously monitor ground behaviour under extreme mining conditions

Mining operations can affect both ground conditions, including loading, deformation, and site hydrology, such as groundwater flow. Geotesta provides ground monitoring instruments and systems to measure and report movement, deformation, settlement and other changes over time. This information helps project stakeholders assess risk, support safe mine planning and operations, and understand ongoing ground behaviour.

Project data regarding changing ground conditions

As excavation proceeds, load increases and water table fluctuates, Ground behaviour may change. Ground Instrumentation will measure such changes, enabling comparison of what has actually occurred versus predicted conditions, and help identify trends requiring additional assessment.

Geotesta can develop an Instrumentation support package including supply, installation, data collection, and monitoring to meet specific needs for a particular mining project. Scope of work will depend upon the types of site risks, number of areas being monitored, how often readings need to be taken, and how the data is intended to be used.

Monitoring methodology

Mining instrumentation must be suited to the conditions being measured, and capable of providing the operational information required. Each monitoring program is tailored to the project’s site-specific risks, available monitoring locations, required monitoring duration and the type and availability of data.

Scope of monitoring

Existing knowledge of ground behaviour, planned project activities and identified risks will be reviewed to determine the purpose of the monitoring program and the most appropriate locations for collecting ground data.

Selecting equipment

The most suitable instrumentation will be selected based on the expected ground behaviour, site environmental conditions, required measurement range and desired reading frequency.

Installation at site

Depending on what is being measured or monitored, the instrumentation will be positioned to collect relevant data about the ground features, structures or areas under assessment.

Baseline readings

Initial readings are made to serve as a base line against which subsequent movements, deformations or changes in condition may be compared.

Ongoing monitoring

Readings may be obtained either manually or automatically using automated systems based on the required frequency and project operating conditions.

Reporting data

Monitoring results will be compiled and presented in a format that supports review by the project personnel responsible for engineering, geotechnical and operational decision-making.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions concerning Mining Instrumentation and Monitoring.

Instrumentation can support the monitoring of movement, deformation, settlement, groundwater and other relevant conditions. The required system depends on the site risks and monitoring objectives.

Monitoring should be considered early enough to collect useful baseline data before relevant excavation, loading or operational changes occur. The appropriate timing depends on the project and identified risks.

Yes, where the selected equipment and site communications allow it. Automated data loggers can collect readings at defined intervals and transfer information for remote access.

Reading frequency depends on the rate at which conditions may change, the level of risk and the decisions the data supports. Frequency can be adjusted as the project progresses.

The available equipment, installation records, data format and project requirements should first be reviewed. Geotesta can then confirm the support that can be provided within the agreed scope.
