Aggregate Testing Expertise

Pre-construction verification for aggregate, crushed rock and source rock products

Aggregate performance directly affects the quality, durability and consistency of pavements, earthworks and construction materials. Geotesta's NATA-accredited laboratory has expanded beyond soil testing to cover crushed rock, crushed concrete and source rock product testing, giving suppliers, contractors and engineers reliable evidence that sampled materials meet the specified project requirements.

Objective confirmation of consistent material performance

Aggregates, crushed rock and source rock products can vary between sources, stockpiles and production batches. Laboratory testing provides objective evidence of particle-size distribution and material characteristics that cannot be reliably assessed through visual inspection alone.

Geotesta coordinates sample receipt, preparation, testing and reporting through its in-house NATA-accredited laboratory, with consultation available on concrete mix design and DTP crushed rock mix registration. The resulting data supports material selection, quality assessment, pavement issue investigation and specification compliance.

Testing process

Aggregate testing is selected according to the material type, its intended use and the nominated project specifications. Before laboratory work begins, Geotesta confirms the agreed test methods, required sample quantity and reporting format for each project.

Receipt of sample

The submitted materials are documented and cross-referenced against the client's project documentation, sample identification, and the agreed laboratory testing instruction.

Preparation of sample

Aggregate samples are reduced to the required mass, dried or appropriately conditioned to produce representative test portions for the nominated testing methods.

Sieve analysis

The material is separated using a series of sieve sizes to determine its particle-size distribution and assess the aggregate grading.

Moisture testing

Moisture testing determines the amount of moisture contained in the aggregate sample at the time of testing.

Assessment against specification

Where project criteria or specifications have been provided, Geotesta can compare the test results against the relevant requirements.

Reporting of test data

Results are included in a concise laboratory report identifying the sample, tests performed, methods used and measured data.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about aggregate testing requirements?

Testing provides measurable evidence of aggregate grading and material characteristics, helping project teams assess consistency, and determine whether sampled materials meet the nominated construction or design requirements.

The available testing methods depend on the material, its intended application and the nominated specification. Geotesta can review the sample details and confirm whether the required testing falls within its laboratory capabilities.

Samples should be representative of the material being assessed and clearly labelled. Geotesta can advise on required quantities, packaging, identification and collection arrangements before submission.

Yes. Where the applicable specification and acceptance criteria are provided, the test results can be reported or assessed in relation to those nominated project requirements.

Turnaround depends on the tests required, number of samples, sample condition, preparation requirements and current laboratory workload. Expected reporting timeframes can be confirmed when the scope is established.

Yes. In addition to standard aggregate testing, Geotesta undertakes research collaborations exploring the performance of recycled and alternative materials, supporting clients exploring more sustainable options for crushed rock and construction material specifications.
